Our Staff

Our Staff

Our staff represents the community we serve: we are led by current and former sex workers, 50% of whom are BIPOC, over 30% who are trans, and over 60% of whom are queer. We are activists, advocates, educators, community leaders, and allies who have dedicated themselves to defending the human rights of sex workers.

We have a dearth of experience that allows us to bring valuable perspectives on topics such as labor rights, international human rights law, social work, LGBTQ+ rights, freedom of expression, and migrant rights.

our History

Our History

While SWP has taken a lot of different forms over the last two decades, morphing based on available resources and community needs, one thing has always been true: the Sex Workers Project pushes boundaries and sets precedents.

Formed in 2001 as one of the first programs in the nation to assist survivors of human trafficking, the Sex Workers Project established an approach to service grounded in human rights, harm reduction and in the real life experiences of our clients. We have always approached our work by prioritizing racial and economic justice as we consider ourselves both a human rights and a labor rights organization.

our strategy

Our Strategy

We’re in the process of undergoing a major expansion. In 2020, we received a grant that launched us into our current iteration by enabling us to hire a new leadership team consisting of a Director of Research, Policy and Advocacy, a Director of Communications, and a Director of Development.

We’re taking advantage of this opportunity to shift the way we talk about sex work, change the laws that harm sex workers, expand legal resources available to our community, and build a trove of thorough research in the process.

our Financials

Our Financials

The Sex Workers Project is committed to transparency, responsible spending, and using our resources to make the biggest impact possible for our community.

In FY22, our budget was $1,533,950. The majority of our resources go to providing free legal resources to members of our community who need it.
