Policy Advocacy and Research

We engage in rigorous evidence-based policy advocacy and research to document and address pressing issues as well as assess the needs of sex workers including people trafficked in the sex trades.

In  addition to our experience working with hundreds of sex workers and trafficking clients, we draw on the results of our human rights documentation projects.

SWP supports community partners in organizing efforts that are sex worker led. To support political and social change towards destigmatizing and decriminalizing sex work we engage in policy advocacy at the local, state, federal and international levels. Through research we aim to provide decision-makers with critical information and practical recommendations for addressing issues related to human trafficking and sex work.

Our past campaigns

Oregon Campaign

The Sex Workers Project (SWP) gained a historic $1.2 million grant from the Sex Work Rights Fund (SWRF) which will allow us to expand our legislative and policy work beyond New York and into Oregon.

EARN IT

The Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies or EARN IT Act (S. 3398) is a US Federal bill with the alleged goal to identify and remove child sexual abuse materials online. While this is a worthy goal, the bill’s mandate is concerningly broad and does nothing to prevent abuse before it happens.

SWP supports UN recommendation 86 that the US …ensure access to public services paying attention to the special vulnerability of sexual workers to violence and human rights abuses.

This bill will stop police and prosecutors from using possession of condoms as evidence that people are engaging or intending to engage in prostitution. SWP supports this bill.
